Remember to support local businesses, not that anyone hires a national chain to cut down trees, but you get the point.
This week's ad seems pretty normal at first: a manly man up in a tree, holding part of the tree he's been cutting down, giving a thumbs up. He seems to be safely harnessed to the tree and adorned with proper attire to be cutting trees. I'd seen the ad several times before I noticed that it's all wrong.
I've actually climbed into a huge elm tree once upon a time to trim it out, so I know pretty much nothing about doing it right. However, I do know that you cut trees with chainsaws. Maybe some parts with handsaws or axes, but generally chainsaws. Jaimie (I assume the photo is of the namesake) doesn't have a chainsaw. Instead, he's holding a giant log, presumably cut from the tree he's propped up in. While it's visually impressive, it does not make sense.
When you use a chainsaw, you can't catch parts of the tree as they are being cut. That would be pretty much impossible, especially if it's a really heavy log like the one in the photo. So it's fair to say that no one in the history of tree cutting has ever naturally ended up in a situation where he's holding a large chunk of the tree in one arm without a saw in sight while still up in the tree. To someone who knows nothing about cutting trees, it might be assumed Jamie is either cutting the tree with the log OR that he climbs up trees and rips it apart like a roided-up ape.
But the truth is even more strange, in that Jamie had to climb back up the tree with this log in order to take the photo. Like if you caught a huge fish and then jumped back in the ocean with it in your arms for a photo rather than taking the picture on the boat. If that's an oak with a 12" diameter and 3' length, then we're talking about 100 pounds. It's not like someone from the crew just tossed it up there to him, unless the crew is full of former WWE superstars. (As a side note, I would pay double for tree service if a bunch of guys dressed as WWE wrestlers showed up to do the work.)
The irony isn't missed on me here. While "Honest work" is what Jamie's Tree Service does best, honest promo photos are seemingly another story. When you hire Jamie, and you know you want to, ask him to reenact this photo for you. Better yet, take him fishing with you.
