No air filter will stop a passenger from giving you Covid-19, especially if you are on a date with said passenger and decide to park for a while. However, if your cabin air filter claims to be .5 microns to filter out pollen, then it might do more than just blow the coronavirus around the car. My VW Atlas has a separate Climatronic filter setting that's supposed to somehow filter more air. According to Green Car Congress,
It uses an air quality sensor with an active biogenic filter that is more effective than conventional pollen filters.
I don't know if that makes it effective against Covid-19, which is a virus, but it may help, especially if someone coughs in front of your car as you swerve to avoid him while he crosses Beach Boulevard. Also, just like "climatronic," "biogenic" seems to be a special word unique to Volkswagen, like "farfegnugen." And "V-Tex Leatherette."
I own a .5 micron facemask that I wear in order to make breathing difficult and protect others from my viruses. The problem with a cabin air filter is that it's really designed to filter the air coming into the car, so when your passenger coughs on you, you'd be better off spraying yourself and her with disinfectant. Or pulling out the UV wand.
Actually, if there's credence in the findings that viruses don't survive long in hot and humid air, then leaving your windows open is probably the best defense against your passengers. You can also run your biogenic air filtration on high if you want, as it probably won't hurt anything. Unless, of course, running the Climatronic system somehow recirculates the air (the recirculation button is NOT lit when I chose the setting). You don't want to set any car to recirculate air when you have passengers during a pandemic.
Even Tesla's Bioweapon Defense Mode can't save you from a passenger who coughs right on you, but it would probably make you feel pretty confident that you can drive around with your windows shut as throngs of pedestrians cough all over your sweet ride.
