Less than a year before I write this post, I was all excited about the possibilities of Frontier Airlines adding direct flights to Jacksonville. JAX was getting a handful of new non-stop flights, one of which would take me home to Milwaukee. The flights seemed to be seasonal somehow, but they did exist, starting in early fall and kind of ending for the holidays. So, cheap, direct flights from September to early November. What a deal! I was already planning my spring trip home, but flights were initially only available through December, so I waited.
I just looked for the same deal right after Christmas 2018 for any flights into 2019. Unfortunately, all the available options for Jacksonville to Milwaukee involve a Denver layover and cost twice as much as those elusive direct flights. That's through April, at least. It also appears that the Atlanta option that was once available has disappeared.
So I'm wondering if it was all just a publicity stunt in the first place. Or maybe all the flights I want are booked up. Or maybe seasonal to Frontier means two months out of the year. The only articles about the direct flights seem to be from when Frontier first announced the routes. It's possible that the company was just testing the waters with some of the flights, seeing if the publicity carried over into bookings. I also tried another one of the announced cities (Kansas City), and I got the same results as Milwaukee: layover, sometimes 8 hours, in Denver. Nobody wants to go to Denver, Frontier. I can also see the KC (MCI) flights all the way through August, and no joy.
I have heard horror stories about using Frontier, mostly because of cancelled destinations and no effort to help get another flight. As in the flight no longer exists. That appears to be what has happened in Jacksonville. Maybe there wasn't enough excitement and the flights were half-empty, so Frontier pulled the plug. It just seems like you'd give it more than two months at that cheap rate. I have to wonder if some other airport is getting new routes right now, writing up news releases, and then going to get dropped by next Christmas. I guess it's a business plan to appear as if you have nonstop flights all over the country when only a handful exist.
It also might just come down to user error on the Frontier website. I didn't join the Discount Den because I wasn't sure I'd be using the service. Maybe only members in good standing get to see the actual direct flights. Or they could all be full for the next few months, but I kind of really doubt it. I mean, am I to believe people from Jacksonville have already made plans to visit Kansas City in June, July and August so that there are no more direct flight options?
I guess it was all fake news. Too good to be true. Even with all the luggage restrictions, add-ons, and safety concerns, I was prepared to do quick jaunts back to Milwaukee, especially since I have a rental property. Frontier Airlines is kind of like that psychotic girlfriend from high school: she's pretty good for a couple of months, then gets all crazy, and finally she's just a bad memory that can't be fully erased from social media. But if she suddenly makes the same promises next year, you're back on the Crazy Train for a trip to MKE. Crazy Plane, in this case.
