It's TV news, so there's no real explanation of anything important. At first, I assumed the DNA was somehow from the driver, like she got out of the car and dropped a bottle of booze at the scene. But there was no indication she ever stopped at all, and when I thought about it, I figured it must have been the victim's DNA that was on the suspect vehicle that led to the arrest. But that leads to more questions.
Assuming I am right, that means that the vehicle must have been tested almost immediately. I can't imagine DNA (blood or tissue) remaining on the outside of a car after a single Florida rain storm, let alone 20 months of rain. I've watched a lot of police-type shows where the authorities find DNA in the trunk of a car after a long time, but this accident was not the same as someone being abducted and placed in a trunk.
If I'm right about the car being tested for DNA shortly after the accident, then it means that the DNA test took a very long time to get done. I guess another possibility would be that the woman hid her car in a garage for a long time after the accident, maybe trying to sell it recently. Seems like the police department would have been forthcoming had that happened.
I'm sure the local news will figure it out eventually, just like the police did. I feel bad for the victim, as he has had a long and difficult recovery. I suppose we'll get justice now, but the story just seemed off. The victim wanted to thank the woman who saw the accident and called the cops, but he was not told who she was. The amount of time. The disregard for another human. The guilt I am sure she still felt. All of it makes you want to just feel bad and not question too much. Like if the mysterious witness was really the suspect. Like if the suspect had connections that kept her free this long. Just wondering.
