The Wait For An Oreo Update For My Moto G5 Plus

It feels like it's been almost a year that I've been waiting for the Oreo 8.1 update for my Moto G5 Plus. Fact is, I've only owned the phone a few months. However, after reading through the forums, it seems everyone else has been waiting forever for the update. And it has been a long time.

I read forum posts from as far back as December of 2017 that seemed to indicate the Oreo update for the Moto was just days or weeks away. There were more promises throughout early 2018, too. Then official word in May. Now it's nearly July.

Maybe it's better the longer we wait for phone system updates. Now we're supposed to be getting 8.1 instead of 8.0. That's cool. My phone is still working fine on 7, so I'd rather get my single lifetime update once system software becomes a problem. From past experience, that's actually next year, when all the new phones are running 9 or 10. But I believe we will get the 8.1 update, so I guess we'll just have to hope that newer version can keep up for a couple more years.

Most of us just want phones that work, a camera that works, a map that works, and the ability to waste time reading our feeds. Once my old phone became nearly useless as a navigational device, I had to upgrade the phone. I'm hoping 8.1 will help keep that function running on my current phone for a few more years. Of course, Google and Moto don't have any incentive to do business that way, so I'm expecting a big slow down at some point.

In the end, I guess I should not care when the update finally rolls out for my MotoG 5Plus. At least it's getting one update. I can't say that for any other Android device I've ever owned, so I suppose I should be happy with one update, whenever that is.
