Historical Flood Risk and Costs

I am sure 2017 will put Florida and Jacksonville back on top when it comes to flood risk and cost, but I thought it was interesting to see the historical data. Here's the top 30 as of 2016 with the total number of claims closed with FEMA payment and the total amount.

While I am not sure if it means there are simply more people with flood insurance in Texas and Louisiana or that storms hit there more often or what. But based on total coastline, Florida is a bargain for taxpayers in comparison. By the way, according to the Congressional Research Service, Alaska is #1 in coastline, Florida 2, California 3, Hawaii 4, Louisiana 5, and Texas 6.

I'm pretty sure none of this will matter next year when our nation's flood insurance program will go bankrupt. I'm not sure where we go from here if that does happen, but for now, it's good that Florida has some insurance if needed.
